The UC CalFresh Nutrition Education Program is very excited to bring the Smarter Lunchrooms Movement to qualifying schools. With training in the Smarter Lunchrooms Movement, the team at UC CalFresh can now advise food service managers and staff on how to make easy, affordable changes to the lunchrooms in order to encourage children to eat as healthy as possible. These changes include: making healthy foods more convenient and appealing; creating fun, imaginative names to increase the appeal of healthy foods; and inviting special guests to come and eat with the children.
According to the Smarter Lunchrooms website: “The movement was started in 2009 with the goal of creating sustainable research-based lunchrooms that guide smarter choices. It is a grassroots movement of those concerned with the way children eat and wish to change these behaviors through the application of evidence-based lunchroom focused principles that promote healthful eating.”
“The mission of the Smarter Lunchrooms Movement is to equip school lunchrooms with evidence-based tools that improve child eating behaviors and thus improve the health of children.” http://smarterlunchrooms.org/homepage
